Fish Creek Provincial Park Receives CA$750K Investment Fund

The Alberta government has announced an investment in conservation efforts at Fish Creek Provincial Park in Calgary.

The province will make investments worth CA$750,000 over three years. The funds will go to the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society, according to a report by EverythingGP.

Minister for Forestry, Parks, and Tourism Todd Loewen said partners such as Friends of Fish Creek and Friends of Fish Creek are vital to our provincial parks system.

He further stated that over the last 30 years Friends of Fish Creek for previous 30 years, Friends of Fish Creek has been a significant component of the work that’s been completed in this provincial park.

“I am proud to recognize their achievements and look forward to continuing to work together in the future,” Loewen said.

The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society began in 1992 after a small group of citizens realized the need to protect the park in the middle of an expanding Calgary. The province stated that its investment would assist the organization in hiring personnel, gathering data to improve programs’ quality, and enhancing visitors’ experience.

More than 250 active volunteers are in the society. They spend over 12,000 hours every year to help educate guests, maintain trail plant trees, eradicate unwanted plants, and conduct field excursions.

Society executive director Nic Blanchet said they are thrilled to continue their innovative collaboration in partnership with Alberta Parks.

“Thank you to the premier, minister, and our colleagues in the Ministry of Forestry, Parks, and Tourism for supporting our vision of a community-based model for the sustainability of Fish Creek Provincial Park,” Blanchet said.

In 2020, the provincial government provided CA$480,000 over three years to society. The money helped the organization offer recreational and educational programs as well as research and management of resources.
